nice meeting He wants to be a lot of things at once. The movie premiered exclusively peacock This week, it’s simultaneously a crazy time travel adventure, a hilarious romantic comedy, and a seriously serious commentary on the chaos of romantic relationships. If that sounds like a lot for a low-budget rom-com — and at 89 minutes, no less — that’s because it is. Thanks to the performance by the game’s main star, there are moments when nice meeting Approaching the performance of his unique color maneuver.
Unfortunately, the film’s attempts to blend slick comedy and open-hearted romance often come across as cliched rather than inspiring. Behind the camera, director Alex Lyman failed to bring nice meetingThe emotional and comedic elements contrast together, and the film ultimately lacks the chromatic control it needs to be able to discuss serious topics like depression in the same sequence that it throws in, say, a series of comic gags. The resulting movie is a movie that is not so memorably silly as it is somewhat disturbing.
nice meetingHis inability to add anything of real value to the romantic comedy genre is even more disappointing by how promising its beginnings are. The movie brings refreshing, hard day-a false twist to the rom-com’s straightforward plot, and despite opening with a purposely tacky tape encounter between the film’s two protagonists, Sheila (hostessKaley Coco) and Gary (Pete Davidson, last seen on The excitement of Generation Z Corpses, bodies and bodies), nice meeting Wisely don’t waste too much time before throwing the necessary key into her own story.
In this case, the wrench that holds nice meetingThe plot is a tanning bed that allows its user to travel to any point in the past for only 24 hours. The machine is kept in the back room of a nail salon owned by a no-nonsense John (Deborah S. Craig), who just so happens to have entered Sheila Coco’s orbit on a fateful day. A brief flashback reveals how Jun introduced Sheila to her time machine, and soon becomes clear from that point on that first unlocked date. nice meeting It wasn’t exactly what it looked like. At least, not for Sheila, who quickly and cheerfully tells Gary ahead of time nice meeting They start using June’s time machine to relive their first magical date over and over again.
Her confession to Gary is one of the many moments that nice meeting She uses Sheila’s penchant for overindulgence and throwing caution to the wind to speed up necessary show pieces, but Coco, to her credit, takes full advantage of her character’s high energy by chewing every line she gives. In fact, although it doesn’t take long for Sheila’s obsessive energy to become annoying, Cuoco’s faltering performance gradually proves to be the only likable thing she does. nice meeting go for it.
Opposite Coco, Davidson feels mistaken as Gary, a shy and unassuming graphic designer who quickly finds himself in Sheila’s romantic whirlpool. As the other half of the film’s central pair, Davidson manages to match Coco’s silly, infectious energy while nice meetingThe most ostensibly comedic moment, but he has a hard time selling Gary’s handful of emotional outbursts. The movie itself also undermines one of Gary’s biggest moments by being too predictable during its first act.
That’s a shame, given that the scene in question has the potential to be one of the few real surprises in a movie that takes a more predictable journey than the time travel premise thinks. Not so long ago, for example, before nice meeting She compels Sheila to tell Gary how her fear of disappointment prevented her from truly exploring a relationship with him, and the arguments that followed this confession seem stiflingly written.
The film’s blazing speed also prevents it from investigating Sheila’s backstory as deeply as it should, making many of the real issues he struggles with seem more like thinly depicted influences than real emotional issues. The same can be said about many nice meetingwhich often presents many attractive ideas and types of subversion only to end up abandoning them in favor of a safer and more predictable storytelling.
The film eventually develops in much the same way as the history in its midst, i.e. it begins promising enough only to become quickly repetitive and disappointingly boring. Not even Cuoco’s charmingly bold performance because his crisp lead is strong enough to add a sense of cohesion to the nice meetingMany lukewarm turns. In other words, the movie is one date you don’t have to worry about skipping.
